Childhood agony of rock star
LUCY CARNE, 29 August 04
FORMER Savage Garden star Darren Hayes has revealed he spent his childhood dealing with domestic violence and alcoholism.
The multimillionaire singer, who grew up poor in Woodridge in Logan City with an older brother and sister, spoke to The Sunday Mail about his painful past.
"My father was an alcoholic and we experienced domestic violence," Hayes said.
"It's a very difficult decision to admit this and talk about this, out of respect for my family, but I only talk about it because we are survivors of this.
"It's really hard to say that, because I love my dad. He is my hero and he hasn't had a drink in 20 years . . . he is an amazing man now.
"But I've got to a point where this has to become my story, where it is the single most impactful period of my life."
The Sunday Mail approached Hayes' father, Robert Hayes, at his home south of Brisbane. Mr Hayes acknowledged his son's comments, but declined to add anything.
Hayes, 32, who lives alone in San Francisco, said he tried to escape his pain by becoming a performer.
"My life, up until the age of about 12, was filled with turbulence and violence," he said.
"It was definitely the reason I became a performer. I wanted to reinvent myself, I wanted to escape. I've been searching for the love of my father all of my life. That's why I became a performer."
Hayes formed Savage Garden with fellow Logan boy Daniel Jones. Their two albums have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. They topped the charts with songs such as Truly Madly Deeply, I Want You and To the Moon.
But at the height of Savage Garden's success, in 2001 the duo split.
Jones stayed in Brisbane while Hayes moved to the US to pursue a solo career.
On his autobiographical new album, The Tension and The Spark, which will be launched in Australia on September 13, Hayes deals with the effects of his troubled childhood and his struggle to reveal his past.
"As an adult, when you get to a point where I was, where I had sold 23 million records, had No. 1s ones in America, I was supposed to be happy, right? Well I wasn't.
"I was still missing something. I was still empty.
"And I spent the last two or three years trying to understand this and realise this is why I can't have relationships, this is why I feel unlovable, this is why I feel insecure.
"It was those moments that I draw from on this record.
"I'm not going to lie to you, it's heavy, but it's a beautiful feeling to really truly say I forgive and I am proud of my dad.
"I don't have to lie about who I was as a child. I don't have to get everyone's approval. Now I can move forward and I feel so much more honest about who I am today."

Hayes savaging demons
August 26, 2004
DARREN Hayes has revealed that the dark side of his new album, The Tension and the Spark, is the result of finally dealing with a troubled childhood affected by alcoholism and domestic violence.
As Hayes was celebrating the No. 3 debut of his new single Popular – a satirical look at fame – he explained his second solo album was his most personal work.
The track Unlovable deals with his childhood issues and Hayes' subsequent inability to maintain a romantic relationship.
"Out of respect for my family, I have never spoken about my childhood. I never admitted to another human being that I grew up with alcoholism and domestic violence until I was 24 and I told my wife," Hayes told music writer Kathy McCabe.
"But that was one of the driving forces behind me becoming a performer and seeking the kind of love and approval I felt I didn't receive growing up.
"My family are survivors, and I am very proud of my dad and my family for getting through everything," he said.
"I was profoundly affected by my childhood and it was time for me to take responsibility for who I am and deal with that.
"I vented and it was cathartic."
Hayes also said his brief return to Australia to perform a tribute to Delta Goodrem at last year's ARIA awards helped to ease the bitterness he suffered because of the media backlash which greeted the demise of Savage Garden and his debut solo album, Spin.
"I went there for Delta – who I had never met before but am now very good friends with – but I think the performance humanised me to the people who blamed me for the Savage Garden split," he said.
"It was unexpected goodwill and I am still so very touched by it."
Hayes returns to Australia on September 13 to launchThe Tension and The Spark.

Darren Nominated for Australian of The Year

Search for a new national hero
By DANIEL BRETTIG
19aug04
SINGERS Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Darren Hayes and Delta Goodrem are among the leading nominees for the 2005 Australian of the Year Awards.
But organisers say Ian Thorpe's Athens heroics – just days before the nomination deadline – are sure to give him a chance of taking the award.
"I'm pretty sure we're going to get a few more nominations for Ian because of the Olympics," National Australia Day Council director Warren Pearson said.
"He won Young Australian of the Year in 2000 and, interestingly, the only other person to win that award and the Australian of the Year was Cathy Freeman."
Among the singers, Goodrem has enjoyed a flood of support following her high-profile battle with cancer and runaway musical success at home and in Britain.
The 19-year-old star is eligible for both Young Australian (for 16 to 25 year olds) and Australian of the Year.
Mr Pearson said the support for Goodrem had been phenomenal and was part of a rise in performing arts nominations.
"It is amazing to see such a vast number of nominations for one person," he said.
"Certainly, the number of nominations for people in the performing arts is higher this year, something we welcome."
Inaugural Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian and runner-up Shannon Noll have also received strong support, capping off a year of healthy album sales and public appearances.
Comparative music veteran Darren Hayes has appeared on the list, nominators citing his past success with Savage Garden and his performance of Lost Without You for Delta Goodrem at the 2004 ARIA Awards.
Other nominees include Glen Sargeant, principal of Plumpton High School in New South Wales, which has a program allowing pregnant students to complete their education, and SA wildlife carer Aaron Machado.
Mr Pearson said he wanted to remind the public that nominees do not have to be celebrities.
"There are many Australians who deserve to be recognised and I encourage everyone to get their nominations in quickly," he said.
Nominations for the awards close on Friday.

Darren Injured in Glasgow
Posted By lssilver on Sunday, August 1 2004 at 5:18 PM
Truly, Madly, Deeply Painful
Pop hunk Darren Hayes was rushed to hospital yesterday after scalding himself in a bizarre accident in his hotel room. The former frontman who had a top five hit with Truly Madly Deeply was left in agony after spilling near boiling water down his chest. Darren was grooming himself with a facial spa at Glasgow's Moat House when the accident happened. A source said yesterday: I don't know how he managed to injure himself with a facial spa, "You sit it on a table and put your face in the top - it's that simple. But instead Darren had apparently tipped it up and the hot water went all down him from his neck to the top of his groin. "He was in a great deal of pain and had ice packed on to the burns. But it was clear he was going to need more than that and the ambulance was called"
The 32 year old Aussie singer lined up for pop bash Party in the Park in Oxford tomorrow was taken to Glasgow Western Infirmary. Darren was later discharged after treatment and his entourage immediately checked out of the Moat House.
Source: The Scottish Sun Newspaper.
Info From The D-Zine:
1st August 2004 - Darren Is Fine
To Clarify rumours, Darren is fine and well.
He was indeed burned from boiling water from his VOCAL steamer, which is a device he and most singers use to hydrate the voice before performances.
The unit tipped over accidentally and Darren was treated for first degreeburns to his chest.
He is absolutely fine and will continue on his promotion schedule.
He extends his many thanks to the Glasgow Western and the Ambulance crewfor their assistance.
Heaven Performance Report
Posted By lssilver on Sunday, August 1 2004 at 2:55 PM
Thanks to Raj Rudolph for sending in this report about the performance at London's Heaven Nightclub."Hi - Just a quick report that Darren put on a great club appearance at Heaven nightclub in London tonite. He sang three songs - Insatiable (the calderone remix), Darkness and of course Popular which was the Almighty remix. The show was complete with funky graphics, industrial type dancers and lots of cheekiness during Popular. The only instrument used onstage was an apple iBook and and e-jay controlling the tunes...It was absolutley brilliant. I am looking forward to his appearance at G.A.Y. next week as he is rumored to be doing a full live show which isn't unusual for the the club."
Editors Note: It seems that Darkness was not actually performed, instead 'I Like The Way' was the track actually performed.
